Brunel Johnson X Post-Lockdown Britain X The Sunday Times Magazine

Documentary photographer and film-maker Brunel Johnson’s latest reportage series focused on black and ethnic minority-owned establishments as they prepare to reopen after enduring one of the most difficult periods in recent history.

This photo-essay was published in The Sunday Times Magazine in partnership with Studio PI and captured the anxieties and hardships of the lockdowns, but also the kindling of a new hope and the resilience of those who – in that most British of fashions – that have simply kept calm and carried on.

As a documentary photographer, it's fascinating to learn about how other people have coped and adapted to the changes that the pandemic brought with it. Within the hardship and struggle, these case-studies found the strength and hope to continue, and working on this project provided me with the inspiration I needed to move forward.
