ESEA Heritage Month

For the first time ever, besea.n and partners have come together to create a programme of events, dedicated to East and South East Asian heritage, culture, history and everything in between. The event was born out of the desire to increase positive representations of ESEA groups in the media and society at large, whilst also combating horrific and racially motivated hate crimes.

By contrast, the purpose of this annual celebration is to acknowledge and learn about the incredible ways in which these communities have helped to shape the UK. It is a safe space, where people are encouraged to come together in appreciation of their shared culture and experiences.

To kick off this ESEA heritage month, we wanted to introduce two incredible artists on our roster. Illustrator, Janice Chang and photographer, Ming Tang-Evans.

Taiwanese, Janice was born and raised in California. She uses fluidity within her work to reflect movement and humour as a way to engage viewers in conversations about social and interpersonal issues.

Our London-based food photographer Ming, is of Chinese descent. Ming's love for food photography allows him to naturally weave in travel, interiors and reportage to be part of his work. He says his trademark is being “lightweight”. When physically in a studio or on location, his equipment often packs down to airline carry-on, and in the artistic sense, he doesn’t bring “creative baggage” to a brief, instead, he treats each as  a new experience that encourages sympathetic and authentic ideation.
